OUR VISION
To live in Connectucut where all residents understand that severe mental illness (SMI) is a medical condition and that Connecticut residents with SMI deserve equitable and compassionate treatment. Our community will recognize the importance of court intervensions, when necessary, to protect the individuals living with SMI, their families, and the community.
OUR MISSION
To support and educate families who share the experience of supporting loved ones with SMI. To advocate for system changes that allow court-ordered treatment following hospitalization – for those living with SMI that have a documented history of negative outcomes so care and meaningful recovery can continue.
SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS & ANOSOGNOSIA
Severe mental illness includes schizophrenia spectrum disorders, schizoaffective disorder, severe bipolar disorder, and major depression with psychotic features. Up to 98% of individuals living with SMI lack insight into their illness. This biological condition is called anosognosia. Anosognosia is widely recognized as a leading reason people with SMI do not seek or stay in treatment.
